No matter how good you take care of your HVAC system, it can start to malfunction over time. It might not be obvious at first, but you’ll eventually notice that your unit isn’t heating or cooling the room the way you want it to.

The first instinct is to call a technician and have the entire unit checked for damages. After all, maybe it just needs a couple of repairs to have it running smoothly again. But, there are some situations where replacing it with a new one is more practical. Here are some things you should consider to know whether your unit should get an air conditioning and heating system repair or it needs to be replaced:

It Needs Constant Repairs

Due to constant use, some parts of your HVAC system, like fans, will wear out. Simple repairs can easily solve this common issue. Parts like air filters just need cleaning or replacement since they tend to accumulate dust, which can hamper your unit’s efficiency. Meanwhile, there are more serious problems like a broken condenser.

Sure, you can have someone repair any damage in your HVAC unit, but sometimes doing so isn’t practical since it’s just too expensive. Also, units that undergo major repair don’t usually perform as efficiently as before. If this is the case, it’s better to buy a new one instead.

Unit Life Span

You should also consider your unit’s life span. On average, it would last 15-20 years from the day of installation. If you’re not sure of your unit’s age, check the chamber door for the metal identification plate, then call customer service and ask for the manufacture date.

If your unit is more than 20 years old, it doesn’t mean that you should throw it out immediately. The life expectancy is just an estimate, but it’s not set in stone. So if yours is still working fine, then you don’t have to worry about anything. But if you notice that it’s constantly breaking down recently, then it’s probably because it’s burnt out.
