Summer is right around the corner, and it’s the perfect season to enjoy your swimming pool again. But before this, make sure that it’s in good shape so you won’t have any problems when it’s time to take a dip.
The common problem with swimming pools, particularly older ones, is leakage. While they’re meant to be watertight, their sealants deteriorate over time. Other parts and accessories will also shift and wear out.
If you’re not really looking for leaks, it can be hard to notice them since swimming pools naturally lose water due to evaporation or backwashing. But if you notice that you’re refilling more than 2 inches of water a week, you might be dealing with leaks. The good news is, it’s possible to easily spot where the problem lies. Read on to learn about simple ways to conduct pool leak detection.
Conduct a Visual Spot-Checking
The easiest way to spot damage in your pool is by doing a manual spot-check. Walk around the area and look for cracked tiles or broken concrete. Underground leaks will eventually cause the ground below to shift, resulting in breaks on the surface of the flatwork.
If you don’t see any damage on the surrounding surface of your in-ground concrete pool, you should try a different method since the leaks may be in the pool itself.
Do a Dye Test
Another reliable way you can try is the dye test. It’s where food coloring or squeeze dye is used in a suspected leak area to specifically see where the damage is. The concept is straightforward. Since the dye is much denser than the water, it will go to the leak much faster. Also, since it’s colored, you’ll be able to see when it happens.
Make sure the water in the pool is calm as possible when doing this, so you’ll be able to see everything clearly. This means you should turn off any filtration system or accessories before the test. Once everything is still, place a few drops of dye using a plastic syringe.
Your pool should be in good shape so that you can enjoy bathing in it during the Summer season. If you think that it has leaks, try doing these tests to see where the problems are. If you need extra help, call your local plumbing and swimming
